Laknawī’s Ruling on the Hadith of “Wuḍūʾ upon Wuḍūʾ is Light (Nūr) upon Light”

light through waterBy Imam ʿAbd al-Ḥayy al-Laknawi

Translated by Mawlana Bilal Ali Ansari

The ḥadīth “wuḍū’ upon wuḍū’ is light (nūr) upon light” is commonly transmitted by the jurists and recorded in their legal compendiums. It does not have any basis, however, amongst the scholars of ḥadīth.

Ḥāfiẓ ʿIrāqī states in his takhrīj work on Ghazzālī’s Iḥyā’ ʿUlūm al-Dīn: “I have found no basis for it.”

Similarly, ʿAllāmah Muḥammad Ṭāhir al-Fattanī in the end of his Majmaʿ al-Biḥār mentions that the ḥadīth “cannot be found (anywhere).”

Ḥāfiẓ Sakhāwī quotes his shaykh, Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī, in al-Maqāṣid al-Ḥasanah, as stating: “It is a ḍaʿīf ḥadīth. Razīn narrates it in his Musnad.”
